In 1955, trained architect and apprentice carpenter Dieter Rams joined the German consumer electronics manufacturer, Braun, as an architect and interior designer. Throughout his career with the firm, Rams was responsible for many iconic pieces that became both prolific and iconic. What is important about his work and how it pertains to what we do at WESTWOOD is that Rams practiced design as a discipline. He drafted a set of rules to adhere to in order to produce Good Design. These are still as valid today as they were when they were drafted. Our designers know and use these principles on a daily basis to rationalize design decisions.
Good design is innovative
Good design makes a product useful
Good design is aesthetic
Good design helps us to understand a product
Good design is unobtrusive
Good design is honest
Good design is long-lasting
Good design is consequent to the last detail
Good design is concerned with the environment
Good design is as little design as possible
